Dick Curtis
Sept. 9, 1949 - May 24, 2002
We were deeply saddened in 2002 by the loss of our friend Dick Curtis, who for eight years was the keeper of Goat Island Light. He had been reported missing on Saturday, May 25th, when preparations for supper were evident in the lighthouse kitchen, yet the keeper's boat was gone and he was nowhere in sight. An alarm was sounded and a hopeful rescue attempt involving the United States Coast Guard and local fishermen was undertaken. After a two day search, hope turned to despair when Dick's body was discovered on the northeast side of the island, the victim of a boating accident. Two of the four dogs that were with him that day swam to safety, the other two were never found.

Dick is missed by all of us who were lucky enough to know him. He had a keen sense for the environment, the tides and the world around him and loved the unique way in which Goat Island fit into nature's plan. Always ready with a story, a joke, a smile, or a helping hand, he was well liked by all who met him. In his role as keeper of Goat Island, he loved welcoming the many people who came to visit the island and enjoyed letting them share, if but for a time, the special place in which he lived. He took hundereds of photos of the island and harbor, many of which are used in the KCT's "Thought of the Week" and other publications.

A book titled "The Keeper of the Light" is planned to be published about Dick's last days. It will serve as a tribute to him, with funds raised from its sale being used to restore Goat Island, his favorite place. Copies will be able to be purchased through this website.
Dick may be missed but he's not missing from Goat Island. He was a free spirit in life, and his spirit lives on there. Just the mention of his name brings back a memory and a smile. Thanks Dick for all of your service to the island and the KCT. And by the way, would you mind shutting off the foghorn on sunny days?
