Volunteer Opportunities

Kennebunkport Conservation Trust

 

Fund Raisers: Create accurate documentation for prospective donors and facilitate fundraising through membership or events.

  • Research individuals, corporations or grants that have the potenitial to help fund the Trust’s activities and solicit their help.
  • Assist in the writing of grants to various foundations or companies in order to help the Trust in its fundraising.
    Promote a program with hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, and general rentals that provides donations of one dollar per nights stay.
  • Create, develop and oversee a program to inform the public, and promote an ongoing campaign, involving planned giving, bequests and other financial arrangements that would provide meaningful long term benefits to the Trust.
  • The marketers will work to create a line of Trust products that could be sold at events, at the headquarters through the mail or on line (E-bay included) to produce income and publicity for the Trust. Work to develop the website as an income producing entity for the Trust.
  • Facilitate Trust mailings, helping to stuff envelopes, paste on stamps and to get mass mailings out in a timely fashion.

 

Investment Committee: Oversee the Trust portfolio, make decisions concerning its relative

security and rate of return, make decisions concerning the purchase or sale

of stock and promote the addition of other resources into the Trust’s endowment.

 

 

 

Trust Writers: Use writing skills in compiling articles promoting Trust activities and events,

history or mission, for use in a regular newsletter or on the website.

 

 

Trust Photographers: Will provide beautiful photographs of Trust holdings, or the plants and

animals found on Trust properties, for use in publications, on the

website, in shows, displays in the headquarters, for sale, or to

convey through images to the public some of the wonderful things the

Trust is preserving for all time.

 

 

 

Special Events Committee: Organize the various special events that will help to fund

and promote the Trust. These include Discovery Days, Twelfth Night,

concerts and other activities sponsored by the Trust

 

The Phillip H. Matthews Committee will create a fun,

successful event (lobster bake or steak bake) on the third Sunday

in August. The committee will determine the site, the food, the

entertainment, the door prizes, raffles and all similar details. It

will also be responsible for ticket sales.

 

 

The Twelfth Night Committee will create, promote and

oversee an annual Trust Christmas party which will serve

as both a fundraiser and an enjoyable promotion of

the Trust.

 

 

 

The “Trust Bakers” will provide delicious foods

and treats in order to enhance Trust events.

:

 

 

Trust Historians: Create an historical record for each Trust property, using a separate

Notebook for each, recording the history, environmental qualities

(flora, fauna, etc.), appropriate maps and how each property came to the

Trust. Add yearly stewardship reports to the records.

 

 

Create and maintain scrapbooks documenting the history and ongoing

activities of the Trust.

 

Scan Trust photos and historical photos into the computer and into the

appropriate files or onto the appropriate disks, edit and enhance. Create

power point or slide shows from the saved materials.

 

 

Archeology Group: Making the contacts, finding the funds and assisting in archeological

digs on Stage, Fort, and Trotts Islands, Tyler Brook or any other

important or appropriate location. To record any evidence found

through research of the early history of any Trust holding.

 

 

Organizers: Oversee the proper filing of Trust records, documents, letters and maps

in an organized and efficient manner. To oversee the organization and use

of the Stephen H. Emmons Lending Library.

 

 

 

Technology Group: Develop the Trust’s use of technology. To assess

current equipment, create the best means of maintaining our

information and keeping our members informed on a regular basis. Work to keep the website active and up todate. Work to integrate the island weather station onto the website, explore the use of tidecharts, weather forecasts or other relationships (with T.V. stations for instance) that could improve and/or promote the site. Assist staff and volunteers with their

questions regarding powerpoint systems, etc.

 

 

 

School Outreach Program: Create and oversee a program whereby school children will

“adopt a property” for a year or semester. Each class will be with an age appropriate property on which lessons in history and relevant topics can take place, in the hopes that the experience will not only promote learning, but

              will also provide participants with a “sense of place”, knowledge about their home town and the basis on which future stewards of the town will be created. Each class or property will also have with it an educator (or educators) who will work with the teachers in the development and implementation of the and the use of the Trust environmental center resources.

 

 

 

 

Paint Team: Willing to give of their body and souls when asked to assure that

Trust properties are properly painted, looking good and protected. All of our painting assignments are located in Wyeth type settings.

 

 

Trust Gardeners: Maintain the grounds and gardens of the Trust headquarters,

maintain the grounds and plantings of Bryant Point and to

beautify any other appropriate Trust holding.

 

 

Fishermen: Evaluate the Batson River ecosystem to determine if it would support

Trout in order to add fly fishing as passive recreational use for the property.

 

Trust Builders: Will use their skills to maintain and repair Trust property and equipment.

Needs will range from repairs to the Goat Island Light and its

buildings to work on the Emmons Preserve. Adding shelves, fixing

damage, installing windows, sheet rocking, building benches, trail bridges,

or even fixing up the Trust’s old wagon are all possibilities.

 

 

The Boat Builders will work to keep the Trust’s boats safe and in good

working order.

 

 

The Trust Mechanics will work to keep the boat’s engines in good working

order and will see that “Iris” runs well, is well maintained and is properly

stored in the summer and winter.

 

Island Stewards: Monitor and report on all islands. Submit regular stewardship reports.

Keep track of camping, permits, inspections, fire pits, campsites, violations

and related matters. Organize cleanups when needed. Maintain the

building on Fort Island. Maintain island trails.

 

 

 

 

Environmental Center Stewards: Oversee the upkeep and use of the Trust headquarters.

Develop a policy for the use of the property, and to establish the

conditions and/or fees for such use. Check on the requirements needed

for a rental and to make sure that the facility has been property left after its

use. Properly furnish the building, maintain the grounds and see to the

overall neatness and organization of the building. To make sure that all of

the building’s systems (heat, security, etc.) are working properly.

 

 

 

Trail Stewards: Build and maintain trails on Trust properties including the Tyler Brook

Preserve, The Emmons Preserve, the Town Forest and those to be created by the

Kennebunkport Greenbelt Initiative (working in cooperation with the

Steward and appropriate committees). Facilitate passive recreation along

the trail system (hiking, cross country skiing, etc.).

 

Goose Rocks Beach Stewards: Monitor and report on all beach activity including the impact

of people, pets, fires, and boats. Monitor the health of the

dune grass, changes in the least tern and piping plover populations, spread of

invasive plants, effects of storms, etc... Make appropriate

recommendations toward maintaining and improving the health and

condition of the beach with a willingness to implement those

recommendations if and when approved by the Board of Trustees.

 

Town Forest Committee: Discuss and make recommendation to the Board of Trustees

about all issues concerning the “town forest”, Steele lands, and any other

adjoining lands that might be added to the Trust’s holdings in the Northwest

section of Kennebunkport. Decide where trails should go, what should be

left as wildlife habitat, and what the rules and regulations should be. Create and maintain a proper forest management plan and implement it when

deemed appropriate. Work with the trail stewards toward creating and

maintaining trails. Work with the Trust and appropriate authorities to

enforce rules. Work with the proper agents of the Town of

Kennebunkport in order to fulfill the obligations and intent of the “town

forest” transfer. Research what lands could, or should, be added to this

area of protection.

 

  

Parks Committee: Oversee the use and care of the Rivergreen, Durrell’s Park and

any future green that might be added to the Trust’s holdings. Suggest

updates to policy and to enforce existing rules and regulations. Maintain a

calendar for booking the use of the greens and to provide the proper materials

to those wishing to use the space.

 

Goat Island Restoration: Assist with the planning, fund raising and restoration of the Goat Island Light

Station to the period of the mid 1950’s.

 

 

Audit Committee: Review the Treasurer’s accounting, financial control and financial reporting on a regular

basis and report to the Board any inconsistencies. Make recommendations for

improvements

 

Insurance: Review current insurance policies and recommend coverage changes to protect the Trust’s

assets and those people who manage, use or volunteer on Trust Properties.
